Maori Rock Carvings - 2hr

Cruise Detail

Towering 14 metres above the waters of Lake Taupo, the Maori Rock Carvings have become one of the biggest tourist attractions in the North Island of New Zealand.

Taking four years to sculpt, the spectacular carving was completed in 1980 and has been visited by hundreds of thousands of people since. The lead carver, Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell, led a team of four artists, who, wearing nothing but safety goggles and speedos, carved out the rock alcove at Mine Bay to create the carvings.

Two smaller figures of Celtic design, which depict the south wind and a mermaid, have also been carved at the base of the rock face to represent the cultural diversity of New Zealand.
